32bit MIDI drivers progress website launched

Can it play the Never Ending Story theme?
Rocking on an electronic keyboardThe release of Liquid Silicon's 32bit MIDI drivers are said to be 'imminent' following the launch of a website detailing the software's progress. The new webpage on the company's site details known problems with the software, which range from unreliable playback to issues with early RiscPCs using 8-bit sound hardware.

Liquid Silicon have demonstrated their 32bit MIDI drivers at a number of shows, including last year's Wakefield event, after first mentioning the project in 2005. The drivers are said to be A9home and Iyonix compatible.

LS's Alan Gibson said he hoped to make the drivers available "as soon as possible" as a commercial product. He also said the software can power older MIDI kit as well newer USB-based hardware.

He said: "It just needs putting together, with documentation, pricing etc. I've got a few tweaks to do with Player - this is supplied with everything so I want to fix that before any stuff goes out.

"MIDI 5 and MIDISupport together provide modern drivers for older cards and new developments (e.g. USB), allowing for multiple connections between several interfaces and software applications simultaneously.

"For example, MelIDI or Sibelius could play a MIDI keyboard externally and MIDISynth internally at the same time."

Liquid Silicon have also redesigned their website ahead of a move to a new server host.

The lack of MIDI support has been keeping me back from buying new RISC OS kit for some time now. This is fantastic news - keep up the good work Alan!

Great to see this.

From processing The ARM Club membership renewal forms, I know that there are a large number of people still interested in music on RISC OS, and this will reopen the possibility to all those who have upgraded to new machines.

Very good news indeed.

So, now with the MIDI drivers and MelIDI 32-bit compatible it's only waiting for the supported USB MIDI interfaces. I'm still an Anthem user, since I've learned to work around its issues and live with it quite happily. But MelIDI is more powerful, that's certain - I just hope I can work with it as easily and rapidly as I can with Anthem. For audio playback, I can recommend the PlayIt module over the (older) !Player app, since that supports the Acorn 16-bit audio hardware directly.

Music composition & production is my main use for RISC OS, so news like this is right up my alley! My RiscPC still performs extremely well and has its hardware fully supported, which I'm still unsure of with regards to the Iyonix and A9home, particularly audio recording and playback. Perhaps someone can fill me in if USB audio recording / playback is supported or being worked on for a particular model?

Incidentally, the timing is very nice, with the Musikmesse in Frankfurt in full swing - see [Link: musik.messefrankfurt.com]

This is excellent indeed, thank you Alan. Some instruments have USB out as well as/instead of MIDI ports - what are the chances we can use them directly?

Brilliant news, now an A9home will make a lovely accessory for my keyboard rig :)

In reply to Webmonster:

At the moment you'd need to use the MIDI ports. MIDI over USB is on the cards but I've not started it yet... looks like it should work from what I've read up on it so far.

In reply to Timephoenix:

On the A9 you have to use the serial port at the moment (i.e. SerialMIDI) until there is some sort of USB implementation.

In reply to liquid:

I take it that this is also the case for Iyonix?

No, I've done the hardware drivers for the podules to so you could use e.g. a MIDIMax or DMI card in there (with a backplane and the right case...).

I'm now taking orders for the MIDISupport pack (for using e.g. MIDIMax/DMI cards on RiscPCs, Iyonix etc.) and hope to send them out tonight or tomorrow.

Email versions only just now, printed & posted versions to follow.

I can also take orders now for SerialMIDI which should follow in a couple of days.

Great news... I am one of the RISC OS midi fun since I had my first A305 so I am looking forward to see all the work done ASAP! :)
