Let's hope it had a parachute
Touch some wood, rub your lucky coin and say a prayer for rcomp.co.uk. Software publisher R-Comp are currently blaming Nominet and their domain provider for the unexpected disappearance of their domain name.

R-Comp emailed us earlier today to say they're trying to find out how this mess occurred and that rcomp.co.uk should be back with us in time for the weekend - but only if we think happy thoughts, we would imagine.

In the mean time, you can email R-Comp or visit their webpages via the rcomp.demon.co.uk domain.

Lets hope it does not cost Rcomp to much money.

whois says that rcomp.co.uk is currently in the renewal process. There is a known bug in Nominet's whois server about the renewal date of domains that are in this state (it adds two years to them). It looks as if the registrar that R-Comp used made the cock up. Anybody know who it was, before it was detagged?

If Andrew's listening, Pepperfish would be happy to do your web hosting and organise your domain renewals automagically in future. :) </plug>

We used NetNames back in 1996/1997 I think. It's a long time ago! Been no problems since then. We're supposed to be paid up til 2005 so....

AndrewR> In view of the recent [Link: slashdot.org] MSN use/license hassle will Grapevine support the 'jabber' protocol and/or attempt to license use of the MSN servers for Grapevine users?

g0tai - We have a full-time programmer working on GV, and several months set aside for GV development. We have to fill it with something ;-)

The developers of Gaim, an open source instant messenger client, have spoken about the MSN thing..

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/msn.php

They reckon using anoter protocol is an acceptable resolution to MS forcing people to use v8+ of the MSN protocol.

Just to let people know, www.rcomp.co.uk seems to be back in action.

I haven't tested email yet, but I assume that since the web mappings are now restored, the email ones will be too.
